Renewable Integration Impact Assessment (RIIA)

The overall goal of the Renewable Integration Impact Assessment (RIIA) was to better understand the impacts of renewable energy growth in MISO over the long term.  This assessment provided technically rigorous, concrete examples of integration issues and examined potential solutions to mitigate them.  It gave MISO and its stakeholders specific areas to focus effort and helped inform the sequencing of actions required to manage certain renewable penetration levels.  The assessment did not find all limitations and did not detail all possible solutions, nor attempt to identify best solutions. However, the assessment included greater details over a wider range than traditional renewable integration studies.  The assessment illustrated specific areas of system weakness, showed when those weaknesses could become problematic and identified potential means to address them.  Lastly, the assessment facilitated a broader conversation about renewable integration impacts on the reliability of the electric system.
