The numbers are in! In 2024, MISO delivered an estimated $5.1 billion in benefits to members. Cumulative savings since 2007 topped $50 billion. Put another way, for every dollar spent on MISO membership, participants realize $15 in benefits.
Those benefits are the result of an in-depth analysis of multiple factors. Each factor, or “value driver,” plays a crucial role in enhancing grid reliability, optimizing market efficiencies, and reducing costs. MISO’s value proposition tracks seven separate value drivers. Together, they determine the total net benefits provided to members. Let’s take a look at a few of them:
Resource Capacity Sharing (~$3.4 billion benefit): Much of the value MISO creates comes from sharing capacity across its large, resource diverse footprint. Resource capacity sharing allows members to access lower-cost energy, improves reliability, and increases flexibility in managing supply and demand fluctuations. This results in lower energy costs, greater grid stability, and improved risk management for both utilities and consumers.
Energy and Ancillary Services (~$928 million benefit): MISO makes sure the energy and the ancillary services needed to keep the grid stable are managed together in the most efficient way. This includes regulating the grid’s frequency and voltage. These services help balance the supply and demand for electricity. The benefit to members comes from the ability for power plants to operate more efficiently. This reduces waste and ensures that electricity is generated and delivered in the most cost-effective way.
Renewable Resource Optimization (~$439 million benefit): Planning at the regional level allows for a more economic placement of wind and solar resources. This value driver captures the benefits of optimizing renewable capacity across the footprint to achieve member goals.
To learn more about the impact of these value drivers, along with the other four value drivers - Improved Reliability ($338 million), Compliance ($170 million), Demand Response ($152 million), and Cost Structure ($340 million) - check out our Value Proposition page on the MISO website along with the 2024 Value Proposition Report.
By participating in MISO, members and their 45 million customers benefit from enhanced reliability, more efficient and cost-effective energy dispatch, and the ability to share resources across the region.
