CARMEL, Ind. — Due to the prolonged winter weather event causing forced generation outages and high load demand across the bulk electric system, the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) declared a Max Gen Event - EEA for the South Region (including most of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Southeast Texas). The declaration directed all Load Balancing Authorities in the affected areas to implement periodic power outages.

“MISO operators are highly trained to respond to multiple large-scale disruptions that can occur during tight operating conditions,” said Renuka Chatterjee, executive director – System Operations at MISO. “We prioritized these challenges and made quick decisions to protect the integrity of the bulk electric system.”

This afternoon, MISO issued a Public Appeal to conserve electricity in the South Region which has been terminated. MISO continues close collaboration with neighboring reliability coordinators to understand their conditions and provide mutual assistance where possible.

“MISO and its members continue to closely monitor the developing weather conditions across the footprint and must take necessary actions to protect the grid,” said Daryl Brown, executive director – South Region at MISO. “Controlled outages are always a last resort effort and necessary to maintain reliability.”

MISO has multiple redundancies built into the system and back-up operation facilities to ensure a smooth transfer of all operational MISO functions. MISO Operating Procedures provide details on the Alerts, Advisories or Declarations we may issue during Emergency Operations. MISO Operating Conditions FAQs provide details on the necessary steps to manage system demand and ensure grid reliability during tight situations.
