MISO maintains transmission system reliability through rigorous economic, reliability and short- and long-term studies. The studies look at the present and the future, using different scenarios, to anticipate what could happen in various timeframes — anywhere from five to 40 years. Transmission planning efforts include:
Creating futures, or scenarios, of what energy could look like under a wide range of economic, policy and technological conditions
The annual MISO Transmission Expansion Plan (MTEP), which approves transmission-owner submitted projects based on planning criteria
Long-range transmission planning, which proposes new pathways for transmission to move from its point of generation to the consumer
Reliability planning to confirm that the bulk electric system has sufficient supply to serve demand
Subregional Planning Meetings (SPM) for discussions on the planning process, proposals and issues
Planning Subcommittee(PSC) to advise MISO on execution of planning strategies
Planning Advisory Committee (PAC) to advise MISO on policy matters as related to MTEP
