Seasonal Assessments

MISO's Seasonal Assessments review projected demand and resources for the MISO footprint and assess adequacies and risks for upcoming seasons. These projections are compared to the minimum Planning Reserve Margin requirements established in Module E of MISO's Tariff.

MISO performs four assessments each year: Summer, Winter, Fall/Spring and a Long Term (10-year) assessment.  MISO also performs two post-seasonal assessments each year, one for summer and one for winter, which compare forecasted demand and resources with what actually occurred in that season.

Summer Assessments

Resource Assessments

During the Summer peak hour, MISO expects adequate resources to serve load, with a forecasted Reserve Margin. It is always possible for a combination of higher loads, higher forced outage rates, fuel limitations, low water levels and other factors to lead to curtailment of firm load; however, this is a low probability event for the Summer.

Transmission Assessments

In general, the MISO transmission system performed well. There are some contingencies that may require operator action to avoid potential overloads or low voltages during the Summer peak conditions, depending on system conditions. These contingencies have been identified and tabulated, with the actions required to address these potential issues contained in Section 7 of these reports.

Winter Assessments

Resource Assessments

During the Winter peak hour, MISO expects adequate resources to serve load, with a forecasted Reserve Margin that exceeds the Planning Reserve margin Requirements.  It is always possible for a combination of higher loads, higher forced outage rates, fuel limitations, and other factors to lead to curtailment of firm load; however, this is a low probability event for the winter.
